- Killer - The Shaper's Story
Back in the late 60's Bob " Killer" Kilpatrick took up surfing when he was 12 years old, coming from western Sydney every weekend he would get up around 4am, walk down to the local train station with his mates and catch a train to Cronulla Beach, or a train and ferry to Manly Beach.
The trip took roughly 2hrs and cost 15 cents for him and 15 cents for his surfboard return. Some weekends they would stay overnight and sleep on the beach in a surfboard sock and a wet towel for a blanket.
A couple of years later Bob's mum bought him a brand new surfboard from Walton's Department store. It was about a 7 ft and was a "SHANE Standard" S - Deck.
When he was 17 Bob got his licence and bought a old EJ Holden panel van. He and his mates would drive over an hour to get to the beach and then up and down the coast looking for the best break.
They would also have weekends away usually up to the Central Coast, Cresent Head or down to Mollymook and Green island.
Bob would also hang around all the surfboard factories in Brookvale, Hot Buttered and Bennetts were his favorites and I guess this was where his love of shaping started.
Bob Shaped and glassed his first surfboard in 1972,
It was red all over 6'8" single fin swallow tail with a big yellow lightning bolt on the deck.
Now 40 odd years later Bob Hand shapes for "Ocean Blue Longboards" and "Killer Surfboards" Using old and new methods shaping anything from 4'9" Fun boards to 10'4" Logs.
